Arsenal Season Preview 2012-13 (Post #1)

What’s kickin’ Gunners?! This is the Arsenal Season Preview for 2012-13. The reason I’ve waited this long to post, is because I wanted the pre-season transfer kerfuffle out of the way. To an extent, this time around, there is less of a fuss. Arsenal’s transfer policy can only be likened to a busy revolving door at the airport. I am delighted at both the arrivals AND the departures and the timings of each. Right, let’s get straight to what matters most, the football on the pitch with the team that plays it best (Barca who? Ok ok … Correction: The best football in the toughest league in the world).  Buckle up!

Let’s break down the squad departments:

Goalkeeper: Wojciech Szczęsny (Chesney henceforth) has to be our best youth academy graduate in terms of loyalty and class. Keep it going son, you’re a top shot-stoppah! Fabianski promises to challenge for the #1 position. Good luck with that! Let’s hope we don’t need him.

Defense: 49 goals conceded last season- about 2 dozen more than the Champs at the Eastlands. One of the famous back 4 (Steve Bould, for you Young and New Gunners) should come in and stamp the discipline and shape that George Graham had inculcated into him. That being said, I’m glad Song has decided to stay atleast for now while we transition into a proper defensive system. Vermaelen and Koscielny should be first team pairing rotated with Per Mertersacker and Djourou come fixture congestion. Gibbs and Santos- left backs check! Right backs- Sagna injury, Corporal Jenkinson?(As Alan Davies would say), Yennaris? Miquel? Squillaci!!? Oh dear.

Midfield: Ah yes! Forever Arsenal’s forte- An abundance of talent, inter-twining positional plays. Straight forward and simple- Arteta and Song cover. Gervinho and Cazorla do an Afro-Spanish revolution up to the final third and hopefully into the back of the net. Theo better make his bench seat cosy with the likes of Ramsey, Diaby also vying for spots. October sees the return of one Rosicky and another Arsenal mainstay- Jack Wilshere. Good times, good times ahead.

Attack: Premier League Experience: Zero. However, what we have in Giroud and Podolski are two highly technical, athletic and more importantly astute and clinical finishers. No nonsense here. Chamakh and Arshavin (Yea.. y’all forgot about ‘em dintcha?)- provide slim backup till they get their confidence back. No doubting their footballing skills.

Verdict on new signings: Giroud, Podolski, Cazorla for £40million quid- Now that’s fantasy football.

Verdict on players sold/yet to be sold: Robin Van Nistelrooy (see what I did there?)- Good business in all honesty. The past few years of losing marquee players has made me desensitized to such things resulting in an evolved Gunner – fuss less, Fußball more (A little word play for you Per and Podolski fans, no? not funny?). Cheer up and save some tears for next year then. Deadwood: Djourou, Bendtner, Park Chu Young getting Park Chu Old for this now. Ok enough jokes, they are eating up through the wages now. Deadwood is as irritating as listening to Jedward (for you rap rhyme… nevermind). Hmm, thank God for the January Transfer Window. Now for the one liners (no jokes, I promise).

First XI: Szczęsny, Gibbs, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Yennaris, Arteta, Song, Cazorla, Gervinho, Podolski, Giroud.

Bench: Fabianski, Santos, Mertesacker, Theo, The Ox aka Chambo, Rosicky, Chamakh.

Promising players: Oxlade-Chamberlain, Serge Gnabry, Henri Lansbury and Ryo Miyachi (Wigan).

Strengths: Squad depth and Steve Bould.

Weaknesses: Right back position till Sagna returns and inevitable injuries.

Arsenal’s Player of the Season: Mikel Arteta, high impact player.

Season Wishes: 1st in the League, Win the Champions League, Win the FA and Carling cups.

Season Predictions: 2nd in the League, QF in Champions League, FA cup QF, Carling cup win.

This is what I promise from the blog, have a look- … Feel free to inform fellow Gunners to join us. We would love to hear your insight and be sure to join the conversation at … Cheerio!
